1963 Austin Healey 3000 Mark II Convertible

Unique and Distinctive looks with performance

Introduced in 1953, the Austin Healey 100 was a stunning addition to the ranks of British sports cars. Its modern styling and relative high performance made it an immediate success in both home and North American markets. The car's stunning good looks helped the owners ignore some of the performance and comfort short-comings. A 2.6 liter 6 six cylinder engine, later upgraded to 3.0 liters certainly helped in the performance area, but by the early 60's this older style roadster design, with it's flimsy roadster top and sliding side windows was due for an upgrade. The BJ7 was introduced in the spring of 1962 and featured a proper folding convertible top and roll-up side windows giving greatly improved weather protection over previous models.

This is a very rare 'German Export' model that was created specifically for sale to American Armed Forces stationed in Germany during the 'Cold War'. It is equipped with a number of additional safety features that complied with the tough German vehicle regulations in place at the time. However, the instrumentation is in Imperial units rather than Metric. The safety features on this car pre-date a similar change to U.S. cars introduced 3 years later.

These unique features include:

- Special front body panel (shroud) incorporating 4 beehive style turn/park glass lamps

- Special rear body panel (shroud) incorporating 4 beehive style turn and brake/stop lamps

- Redesigned rear license plate bracket that relocated the license light and plate above the rear bumper, this bracket was designed to fit an American style plate used by the Armed Forces
  - Rear reflectors mounted on special brackets at the ends of the rear bumper

- Earless octagonal 'safety' wheel nuts

- Locking steering ignition switch
- German style V.I.N. plate with vehicle weights

With the exception of the steering lock, all of these features were incorporated 3 years later on all Mark111, phase 3 Healeys to satisfy newly introduced North American safety standards. It may be that there are less than 25 BJ7's built to this specification.

Austin Healey serial # H-BJ7-L/19986 was built in August 1962 and shipped to Germany on September 7 1962 . It was sold through the Donald Healey Company which held the rights to sell cars to the U.S. Forces stationed in Germany . The Officer who bought it remained in Germany for several years before returning to Oklahoma with the car. The car passed through several owners in Oklahoma before going to California.

The car was brought to Canada in 2006 where it came to an experienced Healey restorer. This unique car was stripped to the last nut and bolt and the engine, transmission and overdrive were rebuilt using the highest quality parts. Virtually every mechanical item on the car was rebuilt or replaced using the best available components. The chassis was rebuilt using many new parts, and the body panels were metal finished to perfection before being carefully fitted to the car.

The body was then painted in its original color of Old English White using the highest quality materials. The interior was reupholstered in the original red color using the best Connolly leather hides.

This vehicle represents an opportunity to buy a unique and virtually ' brand new' 1963 Austin Healey 3000 at far below its restoration cost.
