The name Shelby
had becoming synonymous with Mustang Performance in the 1960’s. Up until 1970,
if you saw Shelby,
or GT-350 or especially GT-500 on the Mustang next to you, it was obvious you
had a strong runner. However, by 1970, the relationship between Carroll Shelby
and Ford Motor Company was on shaky terms, the performance of Fords rendition
of the Mustang with the introduction of the Mach 1 model was making marketing
difficult and it was decided to drop the GT-500 name. But it certainly went out
on with a bang.
This Candyapple red 1970 model Shelby GT-500 is a terrific
example of the GT-500’s final appearance. Sold new at Sanders Motor Co. in
Raleigh North Caroline, it was ordered as many GT-500’s were, with lots of
options!!! The 428 Cobra Jet Ram Air engine puts the power down through a close
ratio 4 speed to the optional Traction-lok differential, complimented by the visibility
group, Sport Deck rear seat, power front disc brakes, power steering with tilt
away steering wheel, power ventilation, AM/FM radio and more were added to the
GT-500, making for a beautifully optioned car that is equally enjoyable to
drive. Carrying the title of Shelby GT-500, this car was certainly deserving of
the ground up restoration completed, ensuring that this car will continue to
show well for many years to come. Thanks to the fantastic services offered by
Marti Auto Works, this car also comes well documented with a deluxe Marti
report authenticating all original options featured. This car is without a
doubt a terrific example of the legendary Shelby GT-500 before a 37 year
production hiatus, a great addition to the collection or garage of the Shelby
or muscle car aficionado.
