The Bentley
model Mark VI was the company first post war car, and it also marked a major
turning point in the manufacturing of their cars. For the first time in the
history of Bentley, they were producing not only the drivetrain and chassis,
but also the coachwork as well. The Mark VI was a very striking car, with the
headlights fully integrated into the fenders, a sunroof was available and
starting in 1951 they came equipped with a 4 ½ litre inline 6 cylinder engine
with dual SU carburetors.
This
particular Mark VI is just recently out of very long term ownership. Held as
part of a small collection of British and other European cars, it features many
of the unique options found on Bentley and Rolls Royce models that in some
cases are only showing up on modern cars today. The function of the solid,
sliding sunroof, very reminiscent of modern cars, the adjust from the drivers
seat rear curtain, folding tables for the rear occupants, adjustable rear
suspension stiffness for passenger comfort, center folding arm rests and even
genuine walnut veneer wood trim. Of the 5,202 Mark VI’s produced, roughly 1,200
were the later 4 ½ Litre version, making this more difficult find. Showing its
age in some respects, this example is a nice, running & driving base to
begin with. A little TLC and this car would be fantastic to drive and enjoy, to
be used for weddings and special events, and sure to grab the attention of
passers by everywhere.
