1970 Chevrolet Camaro RS/Z28
Prototype: The only one known in existence: "
Hurst
Sunshine Special"
A lot of very unique automobiles were produced throughout the Muscle Car era. Some end up being low production for obvious reasons, some turn into sales success stories, and others become almost mythical legends which many have heard of, but never truly get to enjoy. Concept cars get developed, were all too often abused to the point of no return, others quietly slide into the hands of an unsuspecting owners never to be seen again, while some live on, fortunate enough to have found ownership in the hands of the few people who realize how special these cars are. Fortunate for everyone this Hurst Sunshine Special Camaro falls into the latter of the categories.
Starting its life as an already very desirable 1970 ½ Camaro Z28 with RS package, this incredible car probably has one of the most fascinating histories of any Camaro out there. Originally ordered by the very successful drag racer Dick Jesse of Merollis Chevrolet in
East Detroit
Michigan
, it was factory equipped with the solid lifter LT1 350/360hp engine and painted Daytona Yellow with Black stripes and Black interior. No sooner did the car arrive, it was put on loan and shipped to Hurst Performance where it was used in developing a prototype auto/stick shifter, fabricated from a 4 speed manual shifter, and of course the basis for the Sunshine Special name, a prototype sliding leather sunroof!!!!!! Although never used on another Camaro, this sunroof would be applied to several other GM cars in the 1971 model year. The Sunshine Special development story does not end there, as it was then sent to Chevrolet Engineering where it was used for experimental wind tunnel testing. The testing would be conducted on the front and rear spoilers, to help assist in their Trans Am racing efforts. Due to a rule change in Trans Am, these experimental spoilers were never mass produced. The story goes that only six of these front spoilers were ever produced and one remains on the car to this day. Once the car completed its duties for development at
Hurst
and Chevrolet, with all mentioned parts included, it was returned to Dick Jesse and Merollis Chevrolet. From there it would be sold to its first registered owner
January 28, 1971
. Mr. Alan Jones of
Detroit
MI
would trade in his 1969 Corvette and give the dealer $1,186 to consummate the transaction. Going through a few owners over years, the car has been well cared for, and owned by people who thankfully recognized the cars uniqueness and rarity. This very special Rally Sport Z28 is powered by a numbers matching LT1 350/360hp solid lifter engine, turbo 400 transmission and other options include; tinted glass, floor mats, rear window defroster, console, power disc brakes, power steering, Am radio, gauges and more. It has recently benefited from a complete ground, nut and bolt, rotisserie restoration and has seen only test miles since completion. Of course the car comes fully documented some of which includes; copy of original bill of sale, in depth letter from the original owner, copies of previous titles and registrations, previous bills of sale, previous odometer disclosure statement, complete break down of all options, old licence plate and more. This car and its provenance mark a very rare and unique opportunity to purchase a truly one of a kind piece of muscle car history.
